an abstract art movement founded by the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich in 1913, it is characterized by the use of simple geometric forms such as squares, circles & rectangles, & an emphasis on pure abstraction & non-objectivity. Malevich coined the term ‘Suprematism’ to denote what he saw as the "supremacy of pure artistic feeling" over the depiction of objects or reality.
Suprematism emerged during a time of intense political & social upheaval in Russia, just before the Russian Revolution. It reflected broader cultural & intellectual shifts toward abstraction & reductionism, not only in the visual arts but also in other fields such as music & literature. Suprematists believed in the possibility of transcending materialism & earthly concerns to reach a higher spiritual reality through abstraction.
